Welcome to the Self-employment Revolution!
There is a global revolution happening! In North America, quality jobs are rapidly disappearing due to increases in productivity, technological change, and off-shoring. The jobs that are replacing them are too often low paying service sector jobs. The half-life of the American corporation is now a fraction of what it once was. The chances of having a job for life are almost non-existent.
At the same time, thanks to the spread of technology and the internet, the barriers to self-employment and small business are also disappearing. Ninety percent of new business start-ups are now micro-enterprises (companies with 5 or fewer employees), and the vast majority of those are one person businesses.
When Dan Pink published his seminal book, Free Agent Nation, in 2001, self-employment was a growing lifestyle choice. Now, it's becoming a growing necessity.
